Tartu was designated a UNESCO City of Literature in 2015, recognising its rich literary heritage, vibrant cultural scene, and historical role as the cultural and educational hub of Estonia. Since receiving the title, the city has placed greater emphasis on nurturing the literary interests of children and young people, expanded international collaboration, participated in several joint projects with other cities of literature, supported the mobility of writers through residencies and exchange programs, and increased the visibility of local writers in the international arena. Tartu has also invested in renovating the representative centre of the City of Literature (Tartu Literature House), founded an annual City Writer grant, and trained guides for the City of Literature.
